August has always felt like a threshold. Even if the calendar insists the new year begins in January, those of us who serve the church know that a different kind of new year arrives as summer gives way to fall. Schedules return. Committees gather. Choirs rehearse. Christian education resumes. Calendars fill quickly, and with them come expectations. Our own and those we imagine others have for us.
Every ministry year begins with a choice.
Will we begin with anxiety, measuring ourselves against everything that needs to be done? Or will we begin with hope, trusting that the God who calls us into ministry is already at work among us?
It is tempting to believe that faithfulness means doing more. More programs. More meetings. More events. More strategies. Yet throughout Scripture, God rarely asks people to accomplish everything all at once. Instead, God invites ordinary people into the next faithful step.
Abraham set out without knowing the whole journey. Ruth chose to stay. Mary said yes. The disciples left their nets. None of them had a complete roadmap. They simply responded to God’s invitation before them.
Perhaps that is the invitation for us as we begin this ministry year.
Rather than asking, “How will we accomplish everything?”, what if we asked, “What is the next faithful step God is inviting us to take?”
For one congregation, that step may be deepening relationships with neighbors. For another, it may be strengthening worship. It may be investing in all ages ministry, caring for weary volunteers, beginning a difficult conversation, or simply making space to pray together before planning the next event.
Faithfulness is rarely measured by how much we accomplish. More often, it is found in our willingness to listen, to discern, and to follow where the Holy Spirit is leading.
As leaders, we have the privilege of setting the tone. If we lead from anxiety, our communities will often reflect that anxiety. If we lead with hope, grounded in God’s faithfulness rather than our own capacity, we create space for others to trust that Christ continues to lead the church. Our Leadership commission used this passage in a recent training: “Behold, I am about to do something new; even now it is coming. Do you not see it? Indeed, I will make a way in the wilderness and streams in the desert.” Isaiah 43:19. This verse emphasizes God’s promise of new beginnings and God’s ability to provide guidance and sustenance even in difficult circumstances.
This August, I invite you to begin again. Not by carrying the weight of every possibility. Not by trying to solve every challenge before September arrives. Instead, begin with prayer. Begin with listening. Begin with hope.
Ask yourself, your session, your ministry team, or your congregation:
What is one faithful next step God is inviting us to take this season?
Trust that you do not have to see the entire path before taking the first step. The One who has called the church through every season before this one remains faithful still.
May this new ministry year be marked not by hurried striving, but by hopeful discernment and by the quiet confidence that God is already preparing the way before us.
