Bridge Pastor- First Presbyterian Church of Defiance and St. John United Church of Christ

Defiance, OH

First Presbyterian Church and St. John United Church of Defiance, Ohio are seeking an experienced full-time bridge pastor as we conduct the search for a called pastor. The two churches have shared a pastor for approximately one year under a shared ministry agreement. The driving time between First Presbyterian and St. John UCC is approximately 10 minutes.

The start date is negotiable and could be as early as May 2025. Key responsibilities include preaching at the 9:30 a.m. First Presbyterian service and the 11:00 a.m. St. John service, organizing the Sunday services, moderating Session and attending Consistory meetings, emergency pastoral care, heading the small church staffs, participating in church activities, and leading both churches as they prepare for the future.

The two churches have small active memberships, each averaging around 30-35 attendees each Sunday. Both have primarily older members with some youth and children involved. Mission work is a very high priority for both congregations. Community members and businesses are helping the churches with their very ambitious projects. First Presbyterian is known in the community for Coats for Christmas and Tools for School. St. John cooperates with the United Way in the Back Pack Buddies program, providing elementary children with food for the weekend. All 3 projects are for the underserved in the community and beyond.

St. John is currently housing a latch key program with no church affiliation. The church is an open and affirming congregation, supporting LGBTQ issues.

Defiance, Ohio is a small city with a population of around 17,000. It is home to the Defiance College and a relationship between St. John and the college could be renewed, as the church is on the perimeter of the campus. The city has a very active visitor’s bureau and cultural council. Important attractions are the Tuttle Museum, the Stroede Performing Arts Center and the library is on the site of historical Fort Defiance.

Both churches have completed the Holy Cow Assessment and summaries are available. First Presbyterian is in the process of completing its Ministry Information Form (MIF) and profiles created by each church are available.
